Retron 5 gets 3rd Party Controller support via the Nes30

Lifesperience is now Raycommend, which can be found here:    Ray Commend   8bitdo, the creators of the Nes30 and other clone gamepads , have recently released a firmware updates that allow them to directly link to Hyperkin's Retron 5 system wirelessly via bluetooth.  If you have a Nes30 pad, then simply update your firmware by following the directions via this link , and start playing!! You can see the official Retron 5 controller default to Player 2, while the Nes30 is Player 1. Due to the Retron 5 gamepad having more buttons than the Nes30, mapping isn't absolutely perfect, but works well enough with the NES, SNES, Sega Master System (with adapter), Gameboy, and Gameboy advance systems.  The Genesis mapping is missing buttons " ^ " and " > " which would correspond to "C" and "Z" buttons on the official six button Sega Genesis controller.  Fortunately, there are options to remap gamepad buttons via the Retron 5's set...

Missing features that I'd like to see added to Windows Phones

Over the last week and a half, I have been living in a dual OS world where I carry both my trusty Nexus 5 , and my recently acquired Nokia Lumia 822 as daily drivers.   Both phones are running the latest OS versions offered by their respective manufacturers without carrier interference.  Admittedly, Windows phone has grown on me, but compared to both my Android and even iOS devices, there are some baffling things missing especially considering that this is an OS from Microsoft aimed at both business and casual users. I understand that some of these features may be added in a future update, perhaps most of them will be added when Windows Phone and Windows RT are merged in the near future, but, at the moment these features are not in any current version of the OS provided to end users or even developers.  1. Mouse and Keyboard support. When I think about Windows, one of the first things that comes to mind is getting work done.  Sure, Windows is also a ...

Windows Phone 8.1 vs Android: Windows Phone finally grows up, but how does it compare?

Google Nexus 5 next to Nokia Lumia 822 Many years ago, my first "smartphone" was a Windows Mobile device named the HTC Titan. Many will recognize it by its Sprint name, the "HTC Mogul", and for its time, it was a great device compared to what was out there.  Sure, Windows Mobile 6.1 on that hardware wasn't the fastest for its time, but it was pretty close to what Android offers today.  You could customize it with different launchers, app stores, browsers, tons of apps, roms, etc.  The biggest issue was that the OS wasn't particularly finger friendly since it was made for stylus use, but as Windows Mobile got updated, Microsoft was able to remedy that, and HTC made it even better with their "Sense" skin. Then Microsoft killed Windows Mobile long before Windows Phone was ready.  To add fuel to the fire, the new Windows Phone 7 would be similar to the iPhone of the time. A highly locked down system with Microsoft in charge, little to no expandab...

Retroarch challenges home consoles with "Retrobox" initiative

As of August 9th, the libretto blog, which Retroarch is based on, posted some interesting news regarding the direction that the project.   Lead developer, Squarepusher  has announced that following the next release of the popular emulation platform,(slated to be version 1.1) the project will be streamlined to create what amounts to an open source operating system for many different types of architectures.  The ultimate goal will be to create "Retroboxes" that will allow one to play not just emulators, but original software on everything from low end arm architecture, to high end Intel rigs. The developer has expressed his frustration with dealing with closed sourced consoles and operating systems, and the performance hits from Android, as well as Linux.  The blog post also discusses his feelings on "open" consoles like OUYA and the upcoming Steam boxes in a direct, earnest way that makes a lot of sense.  Also mentioned are kickstarter and indiegogo campaign...

Wozniak is right. What is Apple afraid of?

Recently, Apple Inc. co-founder  Steve Wozniak made ripples in the news due to his opinion that Apple should look into making an Android device .  While many agreed with him, many also derided him for stating his opinion.   Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle on this.  In my opinion, all Apple needs to do is create a "Boot Camp" app for iOS and let third parties (such as  Cyanogen Inc.) handle the rest. Before some of you pick up your pitchforks and torches, Apples current success is the result of loosening their grip on many of their restrictive policies over the years.  I'll give some examples: Apple releases iPod and iTunes to Windows (eventually switches to USB instead of just firewire):    Massive success for Apple. Apple drops mandatory DRM on AAC files: Massive success for Apple. Apple switches from PPC to Intel chips:   Massive success for Apple. Apple adds Boot Camp for Dual Booting with Windows on ...

Track your lost or stolen Android or iOS devices online (Windows Phone and PC/MAC/Linux too!)

Find My iPhone for iOS devices With one in five people in the world currently owning a smartphone , it has become a goldmine in recent year for thieves to make quick cash by stealing and reselling those android and iphones.  At this time of year with the hustle of the holiday shopping spree, it's very easy to fall prey to an opportunistic pickpocket or even to simply forget your device somewhere due to the many simultaneous thoughts juggling to your mind.  Luckily, both Apple and Google have both provided native solutions for the average user so that they can fight back against these scenarios. Android Device Manager for Android devices Both " Find my iPhone " and " Android device Manager " can be located in the App store and the Google Play store for free.   Both apps provide a way to locate your device on a map, lock your device, Ring your device even if the sound is off, and/or wipe your device from either running the app on another device, or th...

SNK Classics on sale for iOS and Android

In the late 80's and early 90's, the Neo-Geo arcade/home console was easily the most expensive console ever made.  The reason being that the games that were available for the home console were the identical games that one found at the arcade.  While $500+ games were definitely not affordable for the average family, SNK did have its market and the Neo-Geo outlived many other consoles.   During its run, many classic fighting and shoot-em-up series were introduced.  Many have been ported to the current consoles in collections but the great thing is that now these games are available on the go and are far more affordable than they ever were in the past. The Google play store and The iTunes Store are currently discounting a great selection of SNK Playmore games as listed below. The King of Fighters-i for iOS  for  99 cents Blazing Star for iOS  or  Android  for  99 cents The King of Fighters '97 for iOS  or  Android ...

Aereo review: Is live tv over the internet ready for prime time?

Having recently cut the cable TV cord in my household, I have found that there are quite a few services that are battling for the attention of your living room.  Some of those are well known names like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu Plus.  Other services like HBO GO, Fox Now, and Aereo are more specialized services in that they require more than just an internet connection to work.  HBO Go and Fox Now for example need a participating cable subscription in order to sign up.   Aereo needs for you to live in the area where you sign up for service and they do verify by your zip code on your credit/debit card.  So what do you get for your $8 a month? Signing up with Aereo is a breeze. You simply go on their website and choose from one of the available plans.  Either $8 or $12 depending on how many simultaneous streams you would like.  With the paid service, you also receive 20 hours of DVR recording and time shift capabilities.  The service is very fle...
