Final Fantasy III Android Updated: Now with Cloud saves and Controller Support

Lifesperience is now Raycommend, which can be found here:  Ray Commend

Like the headline says, Square Enix finally updated Final Fantasy 3 with Cloud Saves, as well as support for many physical controllers.  After booting up the updated game on my Nexus 5, I was greeted with the new and very blue cloud save icon on the top right of my screen.

In case that you missed it, the cloud save icon is on the top right of the screen.

I started a new game and played just enough to defeat the first boss of the game, and once in the overworld, I saved my file and tested the cloud save system.  Afterwards, I quit my game, and logged onto my Nexus 7.

The cloud save menu is simple but functional

Once the game booted up on my Nexus 7, I once again pressed the Cloud Save icon and was able to continue from my save file.   The interesting thing about this system is that it does not use Google Play games.  It will instead upload to your Google drive account. I'm not particularly sure of why Square Enix would choose to take this route, but beggars can't be choosers, can they?  Perhaps they will integrate support for Google Play games at a later date.

The other part of the update adds support for physical controllers.  Currently, I have only tested it with my Gametel bluetooth controller, and the game worked fine with it.  I was able to walk/run, enter and exit menus, and select items without issues.

As of today, the game is on sale for 50% off on the Google Play store and I can now highly recommend picking this game up.  Not only have I tried it on many android devices with no issues to report, it's a great game in its own right.  Cloud Saves and controller support now mean that you can play on the big screen if your device is equipped with HDMI out or supports video out via Chromecast/Miracast/WiDi. My recommendation is that you stick with a wired connection to the TV due to lag and timing issues with wireless displays when it comes to gaming.

The only things missing now are true Google Play games support and Immersive mode to hide the physical buttons.  There are ways to force Immersive mode, but they are either incomplete workarounds or need root.

Will you be picking up this game, and is there anything that you'd like to see added to it?  Sound off in the comments below and let the world know!

  1. Thanks for the update. I picked this game up on the strength of its controller support and have put a little bit of time into it. I use it with my Impulse Controller in gamepad mode and it works just fine. However, it seems that there isn't an option anywhere that shows you the button config/bindings, so you kind of figure out what each button does as you go. It's strange that it does give you two options for button config (one where X is to confirm and the other uses Circle to confirm, as seen in the original Japanese versions of many Final Fantasy games), but it doesn't explicitly tell you what each layout is. I haven't played much of the actual game so far, so I can't comment on the content, but the setup of everything is pretty good. I do agree that the use of the Google drive for the save is a little strange, but it does work well enough.

Retron 5 hacked to launch RetroArch and play ROMS off your SD card

It appears that a someone going by the screenname of  RetroN Labo  on Youtube has successfully hacked the Retron 5 console to run the full version of  Retroarch.  In the video shown, various emulators that are not part of the original firmware are playable including the PC Engine, Playstation One, Nintendo DS, and Wonderswan.  As the stock firmware from the Retron 5 is programmed to load games from an original cartridge when it is inserted, this hack appears to run ROM and ISO files, most likely from the SD card slot built into the back of the console. In most of instances shown in the video, emulation appeared to run smooth, and the games previewed looked playable. Currently, Hyperkin (Retron 5 manufacturer) is in hot water with Retroarch's creators due to using their emulator cores without permission.  After being discovered, Hyperkin has shared their code, and claims that they have removed any infringing code from their console.  The Retroarch group feels diffe

Run Android Apps on the Dell Venue Pro 8 with Bluestacks

Android Apps integrate into the Modern Start screen. Those of you that follow my blog are aware that I recently purchased a Dell Venue Pro 8 ( reviewed here ) and am pretty happy with the performance and usability for the price.  In that review, I compared it to the Google Nexus 7 , another one of my favorite devices.  For those of you who are not that familiar with the various ecosystems, when it comes to touch apps, Microsoft is a distant third place behind Apple and Google.   While the Microsoft store has been slowly getting more apps geared towards touch devices, there are still many notable apps missing such as HBO GO, or Showtime Anytime, Temple Run, Instagram, etc.  Some times there are third party replacements, and some times there are not.  The good news is that you may not have to wait to use your favorite app on Windows 8.x.  There is a program by the name of Bluestacks  that will allow you to run Android apps in Windows as close to natively as possible.  Think of
