Conquering the Windows Phone App Gap using Official and Third Party Alternatives

These days, it seems that any time an article mentions Windows Phone, the one topic that always inevitably comes up is the dreaded "app gap" issue. It's not without due cause, after all, anyone planning to spend any sum of money on not just a cell phone, but an ecosystem should definitely do some research first.  Therefore, reading about this "app gap" was a powerful motivator that pushed me to purchase a Windows phone device. I had developed a pure curiosity about the app ecosystem, and to be honest, while it's far from perfect, it is also not as bad as I have seen in the past, earlier attempts of the mobile operating system. This article is a list of most of the popular apps and services that are available on Windows phone either via official apps or third party apps.  Many popular services are covered, and surprisingly, many big name game developers are onboard.  Honestly, there is a lot more in terms of gaming than I thought there would be. The bi...

Watch Live TV on your Chromecast

I've praised it before, and with time, Google's Chromecast has been improving at a steady rate.  Last week, with an update to the FilmON app, users can now broadcast live local TV to their televisions or monitors. While it may seem redundant to some to beam live TV to a TV set, in actuality, it may prove very useful to some.  For instance, you may be in a low reception area for a certain channel on your over the air antenna, or maybe your provider doesn't provide a particular station that you would like to watch where you live.   With FilmON streaming live TV over the internet directly to the Chromecast, it may be a great solution to some folks.   Perhaps you have an old monitor with an HDMI port.  Now it can be used as a TV. Some of you sports fans may be able to watch otherwise blocked games this way. Admittedly,  FilmON is not the best looking app in the Play store, nor is it the most intuitive, however, it gets the job done deliv...

Muzei Live Wallpaper spruces up your Android device with classic art for Free

Customization is one of Android's biggest strengths over its major mobile competitors.  Unlike iOS, Windows Phone, BB10, and Web OS, if you do not like the stock interface on your device, you can completely change it.  It's a great option for those who like to tinker with their device while those who do not can simply enjoy their stock launcher set up. The option to set a "live" wallpaper has been a stock option since the early days of android.  It used to suck up battery like some technological vampire as well as run slow on some devices, but that is rarely much of a problem these days.  Advances in technology have made the OS more battery friendly and efficient, and hardware has also come a long way in power saving.  Many devices also come with higher capacity batteries to cope with our always on and connected world. Enter the recently released  Muzei  live wallpaper by  Dashclock  developer  Roman Nuri .  This  free...

Superbeam - The fastest way to transfer files on Android

One of Androids greatest strengths other than its customization options is its sharing ability.  Whether you want to share with an app or a person there are a wealth of options available on your phone or tablet.   For most people, sharing a picture is where sharing begins and ends in most circumstances. Under most options, file sharing is extremely quick and easy on Android through text, email, nfc, bluetooth, dropbox, etc.   There are numerous options available out there for small files built into the OS or through third party apps, but what if you need to quickly transfer large files to another person in the same room? The answer to that question is SuperBeam.  This app is reminiscent of S-Beam for Samsung's Galaxy phones but unlike that option, SuperBeam works with most manufacturers handsets.  It works by pairing your phones directly through WiFi direct or through a shared WiFi network.  If both handsets support nfc then simply tapping the phones t...
